The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde [Gainsbourg]

[Covers]

Lyrics

[James, spoken:] You've all read the story of Jesse James
How he lived, how he died
Gave you a kick, huh? You're kickin' for more?
So here's the story about Bonnie and Clyde

So get this, Clyde got himself a girl
She's beautiful and her name is [Kazu:] Bonnie
[James, sung:] They formed a gang of two, as much as we know
Their names: [Kazu:] Bonnie Parker [James:] and Clyde Barrow
[both, sung:] Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie and Clyde

[Kazu, spoken:] When I first met Clyde, I can remember
Strictly on the level, loved me tender
[James, sung:] I suppose society's to blame
Never had a chance to make a good name
[both, sung:] Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie and Clyde

[James, spoken:] Everything's been written black and white
[Kazu, spoken:] They say we kill for pleasure, gun to jack knife
[James, sung:] It's only when the teller takes to screaming
[Kazu, sung:] A trigger-happy smile gets pulled with meaning
[both, sung:] Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie and Clyde

[James, spoken:] Everytime a copper stops a bullet
[Kazu, spoken:] A store gets done, they’re sure to say we pulled it
[James, sung:] The headlines always read the morning after
[Kazu, sung:] Murder signed - [James, sung:] Clyde Barrow, [Kazu, sung:] Bonnie Parker
[both, sung:] Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie and Clyde

[James, spoken:] No use dreaming what life could have been like
[Kazu, spoken:] A nine to five day job as clean as snow white
[James, sung:] Within three days comes the sound tac tac tac
[Kazu, sung:] Of machine guns coming back to attack tack tack
[both, sung:] Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie and Clyde

[James, spoken:] Takin’ in first prize, lucky couple
All they had to do was die in double
[Kazu, sung:] The cops were garne, the Barrows went down fighting
That autumn day, green leaves fell like lightning
[both, sung:] Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie and Clyde

[James, spoken:] One of these days, together, six feet under
[Kazu, spoken:] They'll lay us down, in unmarked graves, I wonder?
[James, sung:] Who'll give a damn, who'll want to know tomorrow?
Who was [Kazu, sung:] Bonnie Parker [James, sung:] and Clyde Barrow
[both, sung:] Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie and Clyde

Notes

  • Performed as a duet between James Iha and Kazu Makino (of Blonde Redhead), often alternating between spoken and sung lines.
  • The original version of this song by Serge Gainsbourg (duet w/ Brigitte Bardot) is in French, based on the 1934 poem "The Trail's End" written by Bonnie Parker herself a few weeks before she and Clyde were shot.
